Opinion: Bring Back The Live Feed!
It’s been brought up once again, the forbidden words… Live feed. Big Brother fans are requesting the live feed be returned after one hour of live feed beat the launch of American Idol on Channel 5 and 5*!
In past years when we had the live feed, people could dip in and out and catch up with their favourite housemate at any time. Events happening at the time could be seen and enjoyed. Proper opinions of the housemates could be gathered which come voting time could prove the survival or eviction of a housemate.
Avid Big Brother fans will also remember the “text alerts“. These were particularly useful for fans, lucky enough to have jobs, who could then keep up to date with events in the house. I remember one such alert waking me one night telling me of adventures of a housemate, I got up and came down turned on my live feed to watch the aftermath it was brilliant.
As with Channel 4 who used E4 for their live feed channel, Channel 5 have 5* which they could use for live feed. 5* is not getting the ratings it was expecting so why not use it for something more interesting!
UK fans were ever more angered to here that the first English speaking version of Big Brother Canada will have 24 hour live feed for FREE. Canadian broadcaster Slice has announced that it will offer viewers the chance to watch the house all day and night.
The cable channel announced that it has developed a unique online platform for the show which will allow fans to follow the houseguests’ every move, as well as interact with them and vote on twists and turns in the house. They will be able to able to vote on which rewards and punishments will be sent in to the house, which foods the houseguests eat, and possibly even influence the outcome of evictions.
In the UK, Channel 5 could adopt a system they once had before where viewers could choose out of a possible 3 settings in the house and flip from one to another. This could be streamed online. This could be interactive so viewers could text in with views and comments that could run on the screen. These were very popular in previous series and should be available again.
It has been proved this series that live feed is still a pull for thousands of fans. With the live feed hour that followed the launch of American Idol pulled in around 200,000 with American Idol only able to reach 165,000.
Channel 5 have continued to dismiss calls for the live feed. In a statement previously read out on spin-off Bit On The Side, they said: “With regards to the live feed Channel 5 have opted to invest in other digital applications such as the website, Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, mobiles and tablets – which reach more people than a live feed.”
